  • Exhibit: Luc Tuymans
    September 17 - January 3, 2010 / Wexner Center for the Arts
Experience the work of Belgian contemporary artist Luc Tuymans in his first U.S. retrospective and the most comprehensive presentation of his art to date. Tuymans is considered one of the most significant European painters of his generation, and he has been an enduring influence on younger and emerging artists. Born and raised in Antwerp, where he lives and works, Tuymans is an inheritor to the vast tradition of Northern European painting and draws on this heritage in his work. At the same time, as a child of the 1950s and 1960s, he is deeply interested in and understandably influenced by photography, television, and cinema. Also interested in the lingering effects of World War II on the lives of Europeans, he frequently explores issues of history and memory. His distinctive compositions make ingenious use of cropping, close-ups, framing, and sequencing, offering fresh perspectives on the medium of painting, as well as larger cultural issues. Tuymans's paintings might initially suggest relatively innocuous depictions of everyday life, but there is almost always another meaning lurking beneath the surface. The artist's more recent work addresses the postcolonial situation in the Congo and the dramatic turn of world events after 9/11; these series have led Tuymans to a sustained investigation of the realms of the pathological and the conspiratorial.

The exhibition consists of multi-layered platinum, palladium, silver gelatin, and ink photographs. Elizabeth uses a pinhole camera to capture the lyrical and mysterious aspects of the natural world. As she states, The diaphanous quality of these images reflects my deep spirituality and strong eco-consciousness, and centers on stories that emerge from our culture as potent sites for the engagement of mythic material and archetypal resonances found within our lives. In contrast, John's combination images of distressed daguerreotype portraits, contemporary personae, and text are infused with a stark darkness that is scaleless, confrontational, and sublime.
  • Sabbatical Exhibition: Design Consciousness
    November 19 - December 19, 2009 / Columbus College of Art & Design
Design Consciousness is a blog that serves as an extension of Carl Garant's personal quest to explore, discuss and unveil those cryptic characteristics that surround the phenomenon we recognize as design. Through short investigative commentaries, Garant proposes that design has an intimate and paradoxical relationship with consciousness and that this awareness is fundamental to the creation and realization of design's matrix. He sees the relationship between design and consciousness as being symbolic in nature and a deep-seated, universal principle. Each post represents a small step on this personal expedition, a journey that strives to bring forth an awareness of the strength and power of the design function.
